MILK
Our milk comes from 700 dairy cows meaning with young stock we have around a 1000 animals on the farm at any time. They are well looked after by our dedicated team and we have excellent scores on our welfare measures as a result. We have an Autumn calving focus so most of our milk comes in the winter months via a rotary parlour at Broadmoor and a more conventional herring bone one at Corston.
POTATOES
300 acres of ground are allotted to potatoes on a 6 year rotation and the farm is well blessed with access to water when the normal Welsh weather does not provide enough! Early new potatoes are lifted from late May onwards followed by Salad potatoes and then maincrop with (weather depending) harvest complete in early October. The crop is lifted by our brand new (late 2018) Grimme manned harvester straight into boxes and on to Puffin for sale or storage. Planting takes place as soon as ground conditions allow from around February/March time.
CAULIFLOWER
100 acres of Cauliflowers were grown in 2018 with supply available from late November through until April depending on the Spring weather. We have many different varieties to ensure the full seasonal spread. Plants in blocks are planted out in July. We use a mobile rig for the harvest and have a very dedicated team that go out in all weathers cutting crop to keep our customers needs met.
DAFFODILS
We grow a total of 85 acres of Daffodils and this acreage is expected to rise. It requires our most significant effort in labour terms with over 50 temporary pickers descending on the farm at the peak of supply to pick some half a million bunches for the Welsh stores each year. Our first Daffs are ready in January with the later varieties ensuring we have crop to pick through into April. St David’s day is usually our peak demand! We are truly grateful to the picking team that spend long hours gathering the crop in all weathers!
FORAGE
Grass for forage is a big focus for the farm and we take 3 cuts of silage to cover our needs for the winter. We supplement this grass feed base with areas of Maize and Wheat that take some 200 acres of our available land north of the river.
